You have dated different people. Had different friends. Worked for different bosses. And somehow, the same dynamic keeps showing up. Someone disappoints you. Someone takes you for granted. Someone makes you feel invisible. You think you are picking the wrong people.
The Hermetic tradition says something different. You are not picking the wrong people. You are being shown the same lesson because you have not learned it yet.
The Pattern That Won’t Quit
Sit with this for a second. Think about your last few relationships: romantic, platonic, professional, whatever. Not the surface stuff. The thing underneath. The complaint you keep making but can never quite fix.
Maybe it is always feeling like you give more than you get. Maybe it is always feeling controlled. Maybe it is always feeling like nobody really sees you. Maybe it is always feeling like you have to earn love instead of just receiving it.
Whatever it is, you have noticed it before. You might even joke about it. “I always attract the same type.” People say that like it is bad luck. Like the universe is running a clerical error and sending you the wrong file every time.
But what if it is not an error? What if it is on purpose?
As Above, So Below in Your Love Life
The Kybalion teaches a principle called Correspondence. “As above, so below. As below, so above.” Most people read that as cosmic poetry, something about stars and atoms mirroring each other. And sure, that is part of it.
But here is where it gets personal.
Your outer world reflects your inner world. Not in a vague, inspirational-calendar way. In a precise, mechanical way. The people you attract and the dynamics you end up in are mirrors. They show you what is happening inside you that you cannot or will not see on your own.
The person who makes you feel invisible? They are reflecting a place where you make yourself invisible. The friend who takes you for granted? You might be taking yourself for granted somewhere. The boss who never acknowledges your work? Ask yourself where you refuse to acknowledge your own.
This is not blame. Nobody is saying you deserved what happened. Nobody is saying “you attracted your abuser” or any of that toxic nonsense. What the alchemists understood is simpler than that and harder to swallow: the pattern is information. Your relationships are giving you data about yourself that you keep refusing to read.
The Crucible Is the Point
There is an old alchemical image. The crucible. A vessel that can withstand incredible heat. The alchemists put base metals inside, turned up the fire, and waited. The metal would break down, dissolve, and eventually, if they did it right, transform into something higher.
Your relationships are crucibles. Every single one.
The friction you feel with someone, that grinding, exhausting, why-does-this-keep-happening friction, is not a sign that the relationship is wrong. It is the heat. And the heat is there because something inside you is trying to transform.
Here is what most people do with that heat: they run. They end the relationship, find someone new, and feel relieved. For a while. Then the new person starts showing the same pattern, and the whole cycle starts again. Different face, same lesson.
The alchemists would look at this and say: you keep breaking the crucible before the transformation is complete. You keep mistaking the discomfort for the problem when the discomfort is actually the process.
Now, sometimes a relationship genuinely needs to end. Nobody is arguing you should stay in something that is destroying you. But the question worth asking before you leave is not “is this person wrong for me?” It is “what is this showing me about myself that I have not looked at yet?”
The Relationship Audit
Here is something concrete. Something you can do today instead of just nodding along and forgetting this by dinner.
Take your last three significant relationships. Does not have to be romantic. A close friendship that fell apart. A job where things went sideways. A family relationship that never quite worked. Three situations where you walked away feeling something was fundamentally off.
For each one, write down the main complaint. Not the surface complaint, the real one. Not “they were selfish” but “I felt like my needs did not matter.” Not “they were controlling” but “I felt like I had no freedom to be myself.” Not “they were distant” but “I felt alone even when they were in the room.”
Now read the three complaints back to back.
Do you see it?
The common thread. The thing that keeps repeating regardless of who the other person is. That thread is not about them. It is about you. It is a lesson that life keeps handing you wrapped in different packaging, and you keep unwrapping it, seeing the same thing inside, and saying “wrong gift.”
That lesson might be: you abandon yourself in relationships. Or: you do not know how to receive. Or: you disappear into what other people need and forget what you need. Or: you do not believe you deserve to take up space.
Whatever it is, it has been trying to get your attention for years. The people in your life are just the messengers.
What Happens When You See It
Here is the strange part. The part that does not make logical sense until it happens to you.
Once you see the lesson, really see it, not just intellectually understand it but feel the truth of it in your chest, the pattern often dissolves. Not gradually. Sometimes overnight. The dynamic that has haunted you for years just… stops showing up.
Why?
Because you no longer need the mirror.
The Hermetic principle at work here is Cause and Effect. The outer pattern was the effect. The inner structure was the cause. You spent years trying to change the effect, picking different people, setting different boundaries, moving to different cities. But the cause remained untouched. It is like rearranging furniture in a house with a cracked foundation and wondering why the floors keep tilting.
When you address the cause, when you actually do the inner work that the pattern has been pointing toward, the effect shifts on its own. The people around you start showing up differently. Not because they changed. Because you changed. And when you change the signal you are broadcasting, you attract a different frequency.
This is not magic. It is mechanics. The Principle of Vibration says everything moves, everything vibrates, and the rate of vibration determines the nature of the thing. Your inner state is a vibration. Your relationships are a response to that vibration. Shift the inner, and the outer has no choice but to follow.
The Uncomfortable Part Nobody Talks About
There is a reason people resist this understanding. It is not because it is complicated. It is because it is uncomfortable.
If your relationships are mirrors, then you cannot blame anyone else for the patterns in your life. You cannot say “men are trash” or “nobody appreciates me” or “the world is full of narcissists” and leave it there. You have to turn the camera around and ask what those mirrors are showing you.
That is hard. It is much easier to see yourself as the victim of other people’s dysfunction than to look at your own. Sometimes you are the victim. Sometimes people do genuinely terrible things. Nobody is arguing otherwise.
But even in those cases, the pattern of who you end up with and why, that is still yours. The individual events might be their fault. The pattern is your curriculum.
Think of it this way. A teacher does not give you the same test over and over because they are cruel. They give it because you keep failing it. The test stays the same until you pass. And passing does not mean you never encounter difficult people again. It means you stop needing to be shown the same thing. You graduate to the next lesson.
Starting Today
You do not need to go full alchemist to start working with this. You just need to be willing to look.
When the next relationship friction shows up, and it will because life is a relentless teacher, pause before you react. Before you decide this person is the problem, ask: what is this showing me about myself?
Not as self-punishment. Not as a guilt exercise. As genuine curiosity.
What if this person is a gift? Not because they are treating you well, but because they are showing you something you need to see? What if the discomfort is not the enemy but the invitation?
The alchemists knew that gold does not come from comfortable circumstances. It comes from heat, pressure, and time. Your relationships are no different.
The lesson keeps showing up because it matters. Not because you are broken. Not because the universe is punishing you. Because something in you is ready to transform, and it has been ready for a while.
All you have to do is look in the mirror.
