The Question Nobody Asks in the Manifesting Community
Somewhere between the first successful “lucky” streak and the tenth affirmations playlist, a quiet question starts to surface. It arrives like an uninvited guest at a party, usually around 2 a.m. when the mind is doing its thing: If my thoughts really shape reality, what happens to everyone else’s reality in the process?
This is not a question the modern manifesting industry encourages. Most manifestation teachers treat consciousness like a private sandbox – your thoughts, your results, your life. But the Hermetic traditions that birthed these ideas in the first place never made that separation. The Kybalion, the 1908 text that codified seven universal principles from ancient Egyptian wisdom, lays out a reality that is far more interconnected than “think positive, get rich.”
And one principle in particular – Cause and Effect – opens a door that the mainstream manifesting world would rather keep shut.
Every Cause Has Its Effect (Even the Ones You Don’t See)
The Kybalion states it plainly: “Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”
Read that again, slowly. Nothing escapes the Law. Not your neighbor. Not your coworker. Not the stranger whose parking spot you assumed into existence because you visualized it while circling the block.
Most people encounter the Principle of Cause and Effect through Neville Goddard’s teachings on the Law of Assumption – the idea that whatever you assume to be true, and persistently feel as real in imagination, will eventually manifest. It is a powerful framework. Goddard’s students reported astonishing results: jobs appearing out of nowhere, reconciliations with estranged loved ones, physical healings that baffled doctors.
But here is the thing that Goddard himself acknowledged, even if his modern disciples tend to gloss over it: every assumption you make does not occur in a vacuum. It enters a field of consciousness that includes other people, other assumptions, other causes generating their own effects.
The Sandbox Is Not Really Yours
Think of it this way. Imagine consciousness as an ocean. Your individual awareness is like a wave – distinct in form, undeniably real in its moment of expression, but never separate from the water. When you make a strong assumption, it is like dropping a stone into the ocean. The ripples spread. They do not stop at the invisible boundary of “your” life.
This is where the Principle of Correspondence becomes essential. “As above, so below; as below, so above.” The patterns at the micro level repeat at the macro level. The Hermeticists understood this as more than a poetic metaphor. It is a structural description of how reality operates. What happens inside your consciousness corresponds to what happens in the world around you, and vice versa. The inner and outer are not separate domains. They are the same domain viewed from different angles.
So when you sit down to assume a feeling state – say, the feeling of being deeply loved and chosen by a specific person – you are not operating a private radio station broadcasting into the void. You are adding a signal to a shared field. And that signal interacts with every other signal already present in that field.
The Ethics Problem Nobody Wants to Touch
Here is where it gets uncomfortable.
The manifesting community has largely divided into two camps on this issue. Camp one says: “Everyone is you pushed out” – a phrase attributed to Goddard – meaning that other people in your reality are reflections of your own consciousness. Therefore, there is no ethical dilemma because you are not actually affecting other sovereign beings. You are rearranging aspects of your own dream.
Camp two takes a more cautious view: “Be careful what you wish for, because you might mess with someone’s free will.”
Both camps have a point. And both are incomplete.
The “everyone is you pushed out” perspective contains a real truth from the non-dual traditions. From the standpoint of absolute consciousness – what Advaita Vedanta calls Brahman, what the Taoists call the Tao – there are no separate selves. There is one Awareness, dreaming itself into multiplicity. In that sense, there is no “other” whose free will you could violate, because there is no “other.” Full stop.
But here is the catch: you do not live from the standpoint of absolute consciousness. You live from the standpoint of a person with a name, a history, a body, and relationships. And at this level of experience, other people’s choices, feelings, and trajectories are real. They matter. The Hermeticists called these “different planes of causation” – and they explicitly warned that the Law operates on all of them.
To dismiss the relative level of reality because you have glimpsed the absolute level is a kind of spiritual bypassing. It is like saying gravity does not matter because you once had a lucid dream where you could fly. The lucid dream was real. Gravity is also real. They operate on different planes.
What the Hermetic Masters Actually Taught
The Kybalion does not present the seven principles as isolated concepts. They work together, like the notes of a chord. And when you hold Cause and Effect alongside Correspondence and Polarity, something nuanced emerges.
The Principle of Polarity states that opposites are not truly opposite – they are the same thing at different degrees. Hot and cold are both temperature. Love and hate are both intensity of feeling. This means the ethical tension in manifestation is not really a choice between “selfish” and “selfless” creation. It is a spectrum. The question is: where on that spectrum are you currently operating?
At one extreme is pure self-interest: “I want what I want, and I will assume it into being regardless of what anyone else experiences.” At the other extreme is total self-abnegation: “I will never desire anything because it might affect someone.” Neither is sustainable. Neither is Hermetic mastery.
The Hermetic path – what the old texts called the “Masters” or “Adepts” – was about learning to operate as a conscious Cause while remaining aware of all the Effects. Not avoiding causation. Not wielding it recklessly. Learning to move through it with precision, awareness, and a deep respect for the web of correspondence that connects every intention to every outcome.
The Ripple You Cannot See
Joe Dispenza’s research on heart-brain coherence offers a modern lens on this. When a group of people meditate together with a coherent emotional state – gratitude, love, compassion – measurable effects ripple outward. Crime rates in surrounding areas drop. Hospital admissions decline. Random number generators behave less randomly.
This is not mysticism dressed up as science. This is the Principle of Correspondence being documented in real time. Your inner state does not stay inside your skull. It radiates. It affects the field.
Now consider what happens when someone sits down to manifest a specific outcome at someone else’s expense. Not out of malice, necessarily. Maybe they want a particular job that someone else currently holds. Maybe they want their ex to come back even though the ex has moved on. Maybe they want a competitor’s business to fail so theirs can thrive.
The assumption might “work” in the narrow sense. The job might open up. The ex might call. The competitor might stumble. But at what cost to the larger web? And at what cost to the person making the assumption, who has just trained their consciousness to operate from a frequency of scarcity, fear, and control?
This is the part the Kybalion takes seriously. Cause and Effect is not a moral law. It is a mechanical law. It does not judge. It simply delivers. And what it delivers is always a perfect match for the state from which the cause was issued. Assume from fear, and you get more to fear. Assume from wholeness, and you get more wholeness. Not because the universe is punishing you, but because the effect always corresponds to the cause.
A Framework for Conscious Manifestation
So how do you practice the Law of Assumption responsibly? How do you use your creative power without becoming a bull in a china shop of other people’s lives?
The answer is not to stop creating. That would be like telling a wave to stop being a wave. The answer is to create from a different level of awareness.
Here is a framework drawn from the Hermetic principles themselves.
First: begin with Mentalism. “The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.” Before you assume any specific outcome, sit with the recognition that the reality you are trying to change is itself a mental phenomenon. It is not as solid as it appears. This is not wishful thinking. It is the foundational insight of every perennial tradition. When you truly feel this – not just think it, but feel the dreamlike quality of the world – the urgency and desperation that fuel most manifestation attempts start to dissolve. You are not fighting for scarce resources in a fixed world. You are rearranging patterns in a field of infinite possibility.
Second: invoke Correspondence before you invoke Cause. Before making an assumption about what you want to see happen, ask yourself: “If this assumption rippled outward through every level of correspondence – into my relationships, my community, the broader field of consciousness – what would those ripples look like?” This is not about being paralyzed by analysis. It is about developing the Hermetic skill of seeing patterns across scales. The Adept does not just cause an effect. The Adept sees the effect of the effect.
Third: check the Polarity of your state. Are you assuming from the high end of the polarity spectrum – whens, abundance, trust, love? Or from the low end – need, lack, fear, control? Remember, the effect will always match the degree of the cause. You cannot generate genuine abundance from a state of lack, no matter how many affirmations you repeat. The cause and the effect are the same thing viewed at different points in time.
Fourth: practice Rhythm. The Kybalion teaches that everything cycles. There are seasons for planting and seasons for waiting. Not every moment is ripe for assumption. Sometimes the most powerful creative act is to pause, observe the rhythm of a situation, and align your cause with the natural flow rather than forcing an outcome against the current.
Beyond “Everyone Is You Pushed Out”
There is a more mature way to hold Goddard’s insight that “everyone is you pushed out.” Rather than using it to justify whatever you want to manifest, use it as a mirror.
If the people in your reality are reflecting your inner state back to you, then the way they show up is information about your own consciousness. When you find yourself wanting to control or manipulate someone else’s behavior through assumption, that desire is itself a reflection of an inner state worth examining. What are you afraid of? What do you believe you lack? What wound is driving the need to control?
The real work of the Hermetic path is not getting better at manifesting specific outcomes. It is refining the consciousness from which you create. As the inner state rises in coherence, clarity, and love, the outcomes you assume naturally become more aligned – not just with your personal desires, but with the larger web of life.
This is what inner alchemy actually means. It is not about turning lead into gold in the external world. It is about transmuting the lead of fear, scarcity, and separation into the gold of whens, abundance, and connection. And from that gold, creation happens effortlessly, because the cause and the effect are already in harmony.
The Courage to Create Consciously
None of this is about being timid. The Hermetic traditions do not teach passivity. They teach mastery. And mastery includes the willingness to look honestly at your own motivations, to feel the full weight of causation, and to choose your assumptions with the same care a surgeon brings to an incision.
You are creative. That is not in question. The question is whether you are creating from the level of the separate self – the ego scrambling for its share – or from the level of the deeper Self that knows its unity with the whole.
The Kybalion calls this the difference between being “played” by the Law and playing the Law. Most people are played by it. Their assumptions are unconscious, reactive, driven by old pain and cultural conditioning. They manifest, yes – but they manifest the same patterns over and over, wondering why life keeps delivering the same lesson.
The conscious creator is different. Not because they have more power, but because they have more awareness. They see the correspondence between their inner world and the outer world. They understand the polarity of every state they enter. They respect the rhythm of creation rather than forcing outcomes. And they hold the Principle of Cause and Effect not as a tool for personal gain, but as a responsibility.
Every assumption you make today is a seed planted in the shared field of consciousness. The question is not whether you will plant seeds. You are already planting them with every thought, every feeling, every quiet assumption you carry through your day. The question is what kind of gardener you choose to be.
What Shifts When You Take This Seriously
Something interesting happens when you begin to approach manifestation as a relational act rather than a private one. The desperation fades. The need to control outcomes loosens. And paradoxically, results often come faster and with less friction, because you are no longer generating the kind of resistant, grasping energy that pushes what you want further away.
You start to notice that the most powerful assumptions are not specific demands but general states. Assuming the feeling of being supported, rather than demanding that a particular person support you. Assuming the feeling of financial ease, rather than obsessing over a specific dollar amount. Assuming the feeling of deep belonging, rather than insisting that a specific relationship play out in a specific way.
These general states correspond to the highest octave of what you actually want. And because they are not locked into a narrow channel, they can flow to you from directions you never anticipated. The Principle of Correspondence guarantees that when the inner state is coherent, the outer world will mirror it back. You do not need to micromanage the mirror.
A Quiet Invitation
Tonight, before sleep, try this. Instead of scripting a specific scenario, simply rest in the feeling of wholeness. Not wholeness because something specific happened. Just wholeness. The feeling of being complete, connected, held in a reality that is fundamentally friendly.
Notice what arises in the space of that feeling. Notice the assumptions that want to surface – the specific desires, the old stories, the fears dressed up as preferences. Do not push them away. Simply notice them. And gently, return to the feeling of wholeness.
What would it be like to create from here, rather than from the place of lack that usually drives the manifesting impulse? What kind of ripples would that send through the field?
The Hermetic path is not about getting what you want. It is about becoming the kind of consciousness from which what you want flows naturally – and what flows naturally includes not just you, but everyone your ripples touch.
